Kleinian Circuit (John Dotson’s dream of June 16th, 2022)

Standard classroom setting—say, UCSC Cupertino-like, etc.

I am standing at the front of the room—at the conclusion of a class-session or a whole course—with a few lingering participants. All males. Of my age. Silicon Valley-types. We’ve had a good experience in class. Our journey is complete.

Two or three are having their own conversation on the side. But I am particularly engaged, mental-verbally interphasing, with one participant. He is an engineer, maybe, or probably. We have been discussing something of a quasi-physical-mathematical nature. Somewhere in this, the notion of a circle/circuitry, has arisen—maybe even electrical circuitry. All the way back to Maxwell, to Faraday, to Ben Franklin.

It is a fully charged exchange here in the curricular post-mortem.  Charged and contained.

Time is moving on.

I am instantly infused, and speaking to this engineer, with great enthusiasm and exuberant gestures, I say, “Think of that circle and turn it inside out of itself—and you have a KLEIN BOTTLE!” I am completely saturated. “That’s it. That’s where it’s at.”

And as I say this, as if to complete a psychic circuit, I reach out and lightly touch his upper arm. And again, I am superinfused with energy. Gives me a chill and I shivver.

“Isn’t this just it? This is really it! … I just love Santa Cruz!”

I look to see him nodding with agreement.“Santa Cruzzzz!!”
