“This is a tomb that has no body in it,” says the inscription on the enigmatic tomb of Bologna. It is “a body that has no tomb round it. But body and tomb are the same.” There is no body in the crypt because death has reduced that mortal vessel to dust. What remains is only the eternal stone of the crypt. Yet this uroboric sepulcher is in fact the regenerated body itself. It thus has “no tomb round it.”
