Metamorphosis (John Dotson’s dream of May 17, 2013)
At some point in the dream, I am at the home of my grandsons, something of an outpost, near a high-country trail that I know and love to hike and have recently traversed…
Meanwhile, back at my house, I have somehow missed my appointed task of setting out the garbage/recycling for pickup. The refuse is overflowing and there is no immediate solution to my oversight. Frustrated, I assess the situation, thinking of options—where dumpsters might be available. Then I notice that some sorting needs to be done, and thus begin picking through the garbage for aluminum and plastic.
Among the objects is a cylindrical insect trap made of see-through plastic. I observe a number of insects trapped inside, apparently dead, and I place the trap in the designated bin, figuring the organic matter will be dissolved in the recycling process. As I continue sorting, however, I become aware that the insects inside the trap are very much alive and buzzing. I take a closer look. As I pick up the trap I feel a very powerful charge—an electric shock, a high-voltage current. The insects are very, very much alive, highly energized, and as I look closer I see they are much larger than I have surmised. They are the size and shape of very large cicadas, though their wingspans are proportionally very much wider than those of cicadas.
With some trepidation (though I know these are not stinging insects), I make a clear decision to open the trap and let the insects go. I pry off the lid and step back, and a great many of them emerge, charging away, spreading their wide golden wings, like dragonfly wings, that catch the sunlight.
I feel their drive very deeply transmuting within me…
